On Thursday, an apparent incident occurred on the line-of-contact between Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh. In a briefing given to local journalists, Armenia’s Security Council head, Armen Grigoryan stated that Azeri defence minister, Zakir Hasanov, upon noticing he was being tracked in real-time by Armenian military surveillance, swiftly abandoned the military outpost he was visiting.
As a response to the above-mentioned statement, a newspaper in-line with the Azeri government quoted an official of the defence ministry stating:
What Armenia’s Security Council head, Armen Grigoryan, stated is rubbish and nonsense, it looks ridiculous and reflects his amateurism in military affairs. Just as the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the whole of Armenian territory is under the Azerbaijani army’s observation.
Geospatial analysis of photos determined that the area in question is most likely a new outpost constructed after the 2016 April war in the Goranboy(Azeri side) district that borders the Martakert region of Nagorno Karabakh. Situated on a strategic hill, in a segment of territory formerly controlled by military authorities in Stepanakert.
No further official comment on the issue has been made. Considering the high-technology products available to both sides, the observation of military movements on either side of the line-of-contact is not far-fetched, particularly for on Azeri side whose flat territory to the east of the line-of-contact provides little natural obstacles.
